What metabolism actually is
Most of your daily calorie burn is your basal metabolic rate (BMR) — the energy needed just to keep you alive at rest. On top of that sits activity, digestion and everyday movement. Your BMR is driven largely by your size, age, sex and how much muscle you carry.
What genuinely raises your burn
- Build muscle — strength training adds lean tissue that burns more at rest
- Move more all day — walking, standing and fidgeting (NEAT) add up
- Eat enough protein — it costs more energy to digest and protects muscle
- Don’t crash-diet — very low intakes can lower your burn over time
- Sleep well — poor sleep disrupts appetite and energy balance
Myths that don’t work
“Metabolism-boosting” teas, supplements and eating tiny frequent meals have little real effect. Caffeine and spicy food give only a small, short-lived bump. Consistency with the basics beats any quick fix.
A note on age and genetics
Metabolism does slow gradually with age, partly from losing muscle — which is exactly why strength training and protein matter more as you get older. Genetics play a role too, but daily habits are what you can control.
