BMR vs TDEE — what’s the difference?

BMR (basal metabolic rate) is the energy your body uses at complete rest. TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) is your BMR multiplied by an activity factor — the calories you actually burn in a day. To maintain weight, eat around your TDEE.

How many calories to lose weight?

A deficit of about 500 kcal/day tends to produce roughly 0.5 kg (1 lb) of weight loss per week. We floor the target at 1,200 kcal because very low intakes are hard to sustain and can miss key nutrients.

Which formula does this use?

We use the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, widely regarded as one of the most accurate for estimating resting metabolism from height, weight, age and sex.
