Why belly fat matters
Fat stored around the middle (visceral fat) sits around your organs and is linked to higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease. That’s why a waist-to-height ratio under 0.5 — keeping your waist to less than half your height — is a useful everyday health target.
Spot-reduction is a myth
Endless crunches won’t melt belly fat specifically. Your body loses fat from all over as you create a modest energy deficit. Core exercises strengthen and tone muscle, but the fat covering it goes with overall fat loss.
What actually works
- A modest calorie deficit (around 500 kcal/day) for steady loss
- More daily movement plus strength training to keep muscle
- Plenty of protein and fibre; fewer sugary drinks and ultra-processed snacks
- Good sleep — short sleep drives appetite and belly-fat storage
- Less alcohol, which adds easy calories and encourages central fat
Be patient and consistent
Aim for around 0.5 kg (1 lb) a week. Slow, sustainable change beats crash dieting, which tends to rebound. Track your waist every few weeks alongside how your clothes fit.
