  • High (stage 1): 130–139 / 80–89

What does 140/90 mean?

A reading of 140/90 mmHg falls into stage 2 high blood pressure. One high reading isn’t a diagnosis — clinicians look at several readings over time, often including home monitoring, before deciding on treatment.

How to measure blood pressure accurately

Sit quietly for five minutes, feet flat, arm supported at heart height. Avoid caffeine and exercise beforehand. Take two or three readings a minute apart and record the average.
