What is an alcohol unit?
One UK unit is 10 ml (8 g) of pure alcohol — the amount an average adult can process in about an hour. Units are calculated as volume (ml) × strength (ABV %) ÷ 1000. A large glass of wine can be around 3 units on its own.
The 14-unit guideline
UK Chief Medical Officers advise no more than 14 units per week for both men and women, ideally spread over three or more days with several drink-free days. There’s no completely “safe” level, but staying under 14 keeps risks low.
